Towards the end of first day of N. K. Dhabhar Cancer Foundation organized NKD Oncothon, a plenary session that had a series of panel discussions on Evolution of Oncology in India pertaining to Lung and Head & Neck Cancer, it was refreshing to hear the Star of the Evening – singer, composer and song writer Shaan.
Concluding session of the first day was about celebrities who spoke about how the Indian Film Industry can impact the general population and their mindset towards cancer.
The Panel Discussion was moderated by Dr Boman Dhabhar consisting of eminent Panelists Dr S H Advani, Dr Shripad D Banavali, Dr Asha Kapadia, Dr Sultan Pradhan, Dr Parag Rindani and Ronnie Screwvala – entrepreneur, film producer and one of the most influential people in the world (Time 100). This medium can be used to convey messages regarding prevention of the dreaded disease.
Sending a message to the youth, Shaan mentioned, “While there have some films that glorify the actor smoking a cigarette that depicts that smoking is a cool habit, the fact is that this so called ‘cool style’ becomes habit forming and dangerous to lives of those who smoke and the ones around them too as passive smokers.”
When asked by one of the attendees about how does he manage to be so active in the role of a father, singer, composer and lyrics writer, and being a celebrity attending several events in a day and still look fresh and smiling even towards the end of the day? To this the singing star replied, “It is because I do not smoke and that is the secret behind the energitism all throughout the day.”
Acceding to the requests from delegates, Shaan rendered some songs that conveyed positivity and happiness in life. “Unfortunately, there is no Bollywood song that refers to the lungs, head and neck, so I am singing light musical songs,” he uttered much to the amusement of the audience.
